Mayor's Youth Challenge

Visual Arts Challenge: Grade 3-4

These students will be challenged to create original artwork using a variety of media choices. The theme for this contest will be “Illustrate how you feel about living in Minot.”By design, the theme will be interpreted and represented differently by students of these grade levels. We envision submissions ranging from paintings to drawings to colored pencil works that tell a story of living in our city from the perspective of some of our youngest community members. The winner will be announced during the 2019 State of the City event and will receive a monetary award.

Language Arts Challenge: Grades 5-6

This essay challenge will have the theme of “If I were Mayor…”and will encourage students in these grade levels to address and answer that very question. Is there something they would change if they were Mayor for a day? Is there a particular event they would like to see the City hold if they could make that decision? The winner will be announced during the 2019 State of the City event and will receive a monetary award. In addition, the winner of this category will also be rewarded by being named “Mayor for a Day,” and will participate in events on the Mayor’s official calendar that day.

Video Production Challenge: Grades 7-12

The challenge to these students: Create a video commercial between 1 minute and 3 minutes in length that exemplifies why Minot is a great place to live, work, and play. Particularly interesting in this category are the different visions we expect to see with the wide range of grade levels. Minot through the eyes of a seventh-grade student might look much different than Minot does to a senior in high school. That’s part of the appeal of this video production contest. Submissions in this category could be created by an individual, or they could be the result of a collaborative effort. The winner will be announced during the 2019 State of the City event and will receive a monetary award.
