Road diet? Lane reconfiguration? Road lifestyle change? Whatever name it goes by, it’s starting tomorrow on 16th St NW between 4th Ave NW and 2nd Ave SW.
Early on the morning of July 13, crews will set up traffic control, then get to work crack sealing and chip sealing. By the time the sun goes down tomorrow, that stretch of 16th St NW will transform into a three-lane roadway, complete with a turn lane and a bike lane.
The City Council agreed in March with a plan to transform this section of roadway from a four- or five-lane undivided roadway into a three-lane roadway, with a dedicated turn lane and bike lane.
The City’s Engineering Department conducted a study that found safety issues such as lane drift and a lack of left-turn lanes near Arrowhead Shopping Center. Designated turn lanes would help reduce crashes between 19% and 47%, according to City Traffic Engineer Stephen Joersz.
