The Minot City Council approved two new buyout areas for the Mouse River Enhanced Flood Protection Plan at its July 15 meeting.
The buyout areas, known as Area 6 and Area 6A, includes properties south of Central Avenue between 14th and 16th Street Southeast and south of Burdick Expressway, east of 15th Street Southeast.
Approximately $8 million will be used from the state for the buyouts.
John Zakian, resilience program manager for the City of Minot, told the Council that an environmental review will take place over the next 90 to 120 days. After that, property owners will receive notices about the process. Not all properties within the identified buyout areas will be necessary to acquire for the flood protection plan.
Zakian said it’s possible a public meeting can be held after those notices are sent. Structures will be razed in a timely manner after they are purchased, but any salvageable structures will be sold at auction if possible.
