Minot’s Class 6 rating with the Community Rating System will take effect in 2022, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The Class 6 rating means residents who are required to have flood insurance will receive a 20 percent discount on their premiums, beginning April 1, 2022. Minot had previously held a Class 8 rating, which provided a 10 percent discount.
Any new policies on or after April 1, 2022, are eligible for the Class 6 discount. Any existing policies on that date will see the change when the policy is renewed.
Other than Grand Forks and Fargo, which are Class 5 communities, Minot will be the next highest at Class 6. Ward County is at a Class 7.
Under the Community Rating System, communities earn points for accomplishing various activities, such as public outreach, flood plain property acquisitions, and preserving open space in a flood plain. The points translate to a classification, which can lead to discounts on flood insurance premiums.
